A Step by Step Guide to Replacing Your Pop-Up Assembly
Pop-up assembly helps drain the water from the sink. If you see that the pop-up assembly is not draining the water as it should, you will need to replace it. Replacing a pop-up assembly is a simple process that can be done with minimal tools and relatively low cost. Continue learning.

How to Replace A Pop-Up Assembly

In order to get this job done, you will need a couple of tools, such as an adjustable wrench and pliers. You will also need some plumbers putty, a bucket, and towels. Last but not least, you have to get a new pop-up assembly. You can find it at your local hardware store.

Step 1: Shut off the water supply to the sink.

There is a valve located under the sink that you can turn off to stop the water from flowing. You don’t want to make a mess in your restroom. Before starting a plumb job, be sure to shut off any water supply pipe.

Step 2: Disconnect the water supply lines

Once the water lines are shut off, disconnect them. There is a coupling nut on each side of the pop-up assembly that you will need to loosen with a wrench.

Step 3: Remove the sink bowl’s toggle bolts from the wall

Removing the sink will help replace the pop-up assembly easier and with fewer hassles than if you don’t remove it. There are usually two bolts that hold the sink bowl to the wall. You will need to remove them to take the sink bowl out. Use the adjustable wrench to remove them easily.

Step 4: Take out the pop-up assembly

Now that you have the sink bowl removed, you should be able to see the pop-up assembly. Use pliers to loosen the clamp holding it in place and then take it out.

Step 5: Install your new pop-up assembly

The new pop-up assembly should come with directions on how to install it. Follow the instructions and be sure to tighten the clamp securely without over-tightening it. Roll some plumbers putty into the shape of a pencil, and apply it under the new flange. This will help keep the pop-up assembly in place and prevent leaks.

It usually helps to have a friend help you with this part of the job. After you replace the pop-up assembly, put the sink back in place.

Step 6: Reconnect the water supply lines.

Once everything is back in place, it’s time to reconnect the water supply lines. Use the wrench to tighten the coupling nut securely. Be sure to put them back on and turn on the water valve to check for leaks. If everything is good to go, you’re done!

If you follow these simple steps, you will be able to replace your pop-up assembly in no time. Remember to gather all the tools and the spare part before starting the job. If you don’t have any of these tools at home, you can always visit Fix & Feed.
